I have always had a particular fondness for Daredevil, the character created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett and appeared for the first time in 1964. During the Silver Age of Comics, in fact, I really liked the adventures of this anomalous (blind!) superhero, drawn by some great masters of the House of Ideas, as John Romita Sr. and, above all, Gene Colan; nevertheless, I think the character reached a full maturity only later, under the leadership of Frank Miller and through some noir and darker histories, rich in psychological and social implications. XM Studios devoted to such an original hero an amazing statue, released in 2016 with an edition size of 999 samples, which was designed and sculpted by Muzifal in collaboration with the XM Studios design and development team. The piece is imposing, with a size of 40 x 23 cm, a height of 60 cm and a weight of approximately 10 Kg. The pose is dynamic and represents at best the great agility of the hero: Daredevil, in fact, rests on a steep masonry slab with an incredible naturalness, with the right leg fully bent in support, the left one elongated on the base and both the arms open in order to achieve the perfect balance. The physique is slender, muscular and powerful with no excess, and the figure instills a sensation of charm and elegance. The details of the suit are quite different from the classic version of Comics, but the costume design is very attractive and provides the whole figure with some more realistic and modern traits. For example, the central part on chest and abdomen is characterized by a fine punctuated texture (which points out the perfect double "D", carved in relief) and two inner paddings are rather visible on shoulders; both the long gloves and boots are tightened by leather buckles and colored by a slightly darker red tone, compared to the rest of the costume, while a large protuberance appears on back and two small black buckles surround the head at neck level. The result is a suit with a sort of high-tech look, very nice and, in my opinion, appropriate to the hero's features. The attention paid to details is impressive! Note the thick stitching along the arms and legs, the many folds of the suit which emphasize the muscles everywhere, the details of the belt at waistline or the holster on the left leg, the black reinforcements on knuckels and the perfect proportion of the stick the hero uses as an attack weapon. The base is really awesome: it acts not only as a support for the character but also (and above all) as a scenographic background and represents an integrated, essential part of the whole. It depicts the external part of an ancient church in gothic style, constituted by the long and steep masonry board which the hero rests on, and a vertical element ending with a arched shape, embellished with a central rose window and other decorative elements. The bottom of the board is equipped with two animal heads in a mythological style, which are symmetrically placed at both sides and represent the head of a lion with a thick mane and two long and curve horns, similar to a ram. The statues comes wit two interchangeable heads. The unmasked one represents the face of Matt Murdock and is characterized by a pair of black glasses, furrowed brow and a finely sculpted, brown hair. The best one, however, is no doubt the masked head, with the ears clearly visible under the leather, an intriguing red color at eyes, many folds on back at nape level, the classic, rigid tiny horns on forehead and an aggressive gaze, really worthy of the Man without Fear! As for other pieces released by XM Studios, some collectors realized (in a very limited edition) additional add-ons to change the display. Among these, I could not avoid to purchase a spectacular head (see the Photos section), where the mask is replaced by a sort of large bandana, covering the top of the head and a charming, well-finished beard. In conclusion, this Daredevil statue represents another clear example of the great talent and creativity of the Singaporean team and, in my humble opinion, one of the finest Marvel collectibles ever realized for this caprivating and original character.
